$250 stimulus check in 2010 for Social Security Recipients

by Mike Holman on October 15, 2009

President Obama has recently announced that there will be a one-time $250 stimulus check in 2010 to recipients of Social Security.  This bonus check is part of of his ongoing effort to stimulate the economy out of recession.  Please note that Congress has yet to approve this bill.

[Edit - This check was supposed to have been paid out in the first quarter of 2010.  Given that the first quarter just ended and there is no check it looks like this issue is dead and there will be no $250 stimulus check in 2010.]

Who is eligible for the $250 stimulus check in 2010?

Anyone who is currently receiving Social Security (SS) payments will be eligible for the $250 check.  There are also some other groups who will receive this check including SSI and disabled veterans.

[update - find out about the new $250 stimulus check in 2010 for SSI recipients]

When will the $250 checks be paid out?

It is not known at this time when the payments will be made but it is likely that they will be paid in the first quarter of 2010 (ie before the end of March).

Is there any income limit for the $250 payment?

No, it doesn’t matter if you have other income or if you are working or not.  It doesn’t matter how much income you make – you will still get the check.

How much will this cost the government?

According to White house officials, the cost of all the stimulus checks will be $13 billion.  A large amount of money but don’t forget that the stimulus package for 2009 was almost $800 billion.

Why is the government doing this?

The government is giving out this money in order to try to stimulate the economy.  Because of problems in the financial markets and housing markets over the last 2 years, there has been a slowdown in economic activity in America and many job losses.  By putting extra money into the economy it is hoped that the decline of the economy can be slowed down or even reversed.

Will there be a Social Security raise this year?

No, in fact part of the reason the $250 bonus check was created was to make up for the fact that there is no cost of living raise in Social Security payments this year.

Will it be a check or electronic payment?

The $250 should be given to you in the same format you currently receive your regular Social Security payment.  If you get your SS payment by check then the $250 will also be by check.  If you get your SS payment deposited in to your bank account then the $250 will also be deposited into your bank account.

More information on Social Security

Social Security provides the average retiree with a monthly check of about $1,150. The program provides 40 percent of all income received by elderly people in the United States; one in five older married couples and two in five older single people rely on it for at least 90 percent of their income.

UPDATE on my March 19, 2010 post…Imagine this, this morning I received another shredder paper…a reminder to the reminder concerning mailing my census report back….well the commercials on tv and this reminder says, ” Have you mailed it yet? Well I just don’t think I will mail it out until midnight April 01,2010! Why?
Their first question can not be answered until then, see they asked “how many persons living at this location on April 01, 2010?
If someone should passed away prior to the completion of April 01, 2010….that early mailing WOULD BE WRONG, LISTEN UP WASHINGTON, D.C. but I get it, the American census count would give some extra dollars for a road to nowhere (much like the Dennis Hasert) project , if we are counted as living , their ante is up! Dead on a census report yields no purpose to their cause. They don’t ask if anyone has passed away since the last census.
Another “catty” question…I did not see any FILTH on this blog….why do you even bother? The people who speak here are intelligent, as one can read so…. please whether you are a Dem or Rep, remember we are AMERICAN. so the next time someone would ask “Are you a Dem or Rep”? ANSWER AMERICAN.

to everyone who has posted above I went on line to ssa website you know what I found out NOTHING IT’S JUST A BUNCH OF PHONY POLITICIANS. I also called and there again the reply we don’t know anything about a stimulus check

4 Russell March 30, 2010 at 1:38 pm

The $250.00 stimulus payment for social security recipients was denied by the politicians in Washington. It wasn’t widely publicized as they don’t want us to know. There was a small piece in the USA today paper about 3 weeks ago but it was on the inside of the paper and a small article. Finding the info on it is hard to do too but in an earlier post towards the first part of March I posted the web site for the info and someone else posted info on how the voting went.

7 Tom March 30, 2010 at 9:26 pm

Clarcie:

Here we are trying to get by on a tight budget, and here you are trying to make a buck off of us. That really takes a lot of nerve Clarcie, right now $3.00 is a qt. of milk, or a couple loaves of bread to eat. You really should be a shamed of urself for even trying to ask for $3.00 a visit. Do u give us a guarantee on making money Clarcie?

8 Stacy March 30, 2010 at 11:24 pm

When is the SSI check coming?

9 clarcie brown March 31, 2010 at 1:10 am

hey tom from clarcie, i am not a bit ashamed of myself, i am not asking for the ones on disability t0 spend money on my website service, i am asking if any of you may have some friends that arent on disability to pass the word to them. that they may be interested thats all, sorry if i affended anyone my sincere apologies. clarcie brown.

10 julia March 31, 2010 at 1:19 pm

Clarcie, the posters on this blog…have no $3.00 for your website, they are trying to live as you wish to, with an extra $3.00 BUT NOT FROM YOU.
Stacy, you should read the above post (s) from Russell and you would see he was very informative…you had an answer before you posted.
THE STIMULUS FOR 2010 FOR SENIORS, VETS, & DISABLED LOST IN THE SENATE VOTE 50 against you AND me, 47 for you AND me. UNLESS vetoed we won’t get a stimulus check this year.
Who wants to blame either party for all the red tape? We put all of them in office to pull together, cross isles and work on policies to help/aid every American….it takes 2 to tango….even in politics. Hey look.. they are beginning to campaign for the next election “CHANGE IT” we should not keep them in office, neither party.

Does anyone know when the Stimulus Check will be coming?

12 clarcie brown March 31, 2010 at 5:50 pm

clarcie.,,hey julia, i am not asking for any of you guyes on disability to spend any thing at all on my site, i just ask that you may kindly mention it to a friend that is not on ssc, or disability to visit my site to see if it may interest them.

13 Carmenf April 1, 2010 at 9:52 am

Dont lose your sleep over the stimulous check..I on think we will get it..they keep on taking money from us , the poorer get poorer and the richer get richer…

14 julia April 1, 2010 at 12:12 pm

Clarcie…..I am not disabled, I worked 56 years for my monthly social security retirement benefits check and I pay my medicare premium along with part D……so then what you meant, you are not asking the disabled to visit your website but you want ssa and vets to give you $3.00, and all this without you even saying what type of help one might receive when signing- on, sounds like the senate at work….moonlighting. My friends go to Ebay, Amazon, and yard sales, to get help…

15 Ann April 1, 2010 at 12:41 pm

THERE WILL BE NO, I REPEAT, NO STIMULUS CHECK!!!!!!!
I realize there are many people in this country who have not heard that, but I think it’s time we get the word to them so they can quit counting on it. Congress DID NOT pass the bill which had our stimulus request in it…so I will say it one more time and hope most will read down enough to see it….let’s pass the word along. Have a wonderful Easter!

16 julia April 1, 2010 at 12:46 pm

Does anyone know if we will get a stimulus check?

17 clarcie brown April 1, 2010 at 1:19 pm

clarcie brown, julia you are not reading my note correctly., i am not asking for anyone that is on ssc disibility, vets, ssi, or that are on socialty security, to spend money on my website. i am askingthat if you have friends that arent on these programs ,to see if they may be interested in visiting my site . my site is a site where people can ask me questions about any thing that pertains to common sense, and where they can ask advice on most subjects. and if i cant be of service to them there will be no charge. i am on disability and cant work outside my home. ihave been on disability for 8 yrs now. i hope that you all understand. respectfully ..clarcie brown.

18 Stacy April 2, 2010 at 1:56 am

Well when is it going to come? I thought I read that it wasn’t? I hope it does!

19 Ann April 2, 2010 at 8:00 am

Stacy……THERE WILL BE NO, NO, NO STIMULUS CHECK! I just hate it that so many of you are still counting on it. We truly are not getting one. It’s time to move on and budget your life accordingly. I am so sorry that we aren’t getting one, I could use it too. But it is fact that congress DID NOT pass the bill that contained our stimulus money. I wish I could help everyone! I wish I were one of the wealthy women in America. lol…but, I’m not. I hope each and every one of you has a wonderful Easter! Ann

20 julia April 2, 2010 at 11:15 am

Hey Clarcie, read your post on March 31, 2010 @ 5:50 pm and I rest my point/counterpoint with you, yet one thing in that post may not pertain to me….I am not a “you guyes”, (eq) boodles of respect to you.

21 Tammy April 2, 2010 at 1:19 pm

How about a one time foodstamp benefit of $250.00 if they wont agree on a cash benefit. I could use that. It would free up some cash that is used for food for those who dont get food stamps or very little in food stamp benefits. $250.00 any way you can get will help out. I would be happy either way. The idea of the stimulas check is to help out with rising prices. Yes I know that you cant pay utility bills or rent with food stamps but you take what you can get. We should be thankful for what we do get and have gotten. I have a roof over my head and a check every month to pay my rent and bills , sure its rough but I could be homeless and no check. I hate being poor , but there is worse off than me.

22 david April 2, 2010 at 6:05 pm

ann why are u the only one knows that the bill didn’t pass

23 Daniel R. Martin April 2, 2010 at 7:00 pm

I notice that the rejection of the bill to grant a 2010 Stimulus to Seniors, by 50 Democratic Congressmen, has been kept very quiet. WE NEED TO KNOW WHO THESE REPRESENTATIVES ARE so we can let them know how we feel in November.

24 Ann April 2, 2010 at 11:10 pm

David……
I’m not…this was published in the paper and on the internet….

[Update Mar 2010] Unfortunately the Democrat-controlled Senate has rejected a measure by a 50 to 47 vote that would have given seniors a one-time Social Security benefit
payment of $250 to make up for the lack of a cost of living increase The jobs bill, which contained the $250 SSI provision, was rejected despite Obama’s backing. The payments which would amount to $13 billion, where earmarked in the jobs bill – which was deemed too costly by lawmakers trying to allay their image of big spenders.

The badly needed Social Security payments would have helped 57 million seniors, a risky number to overlook considering the fall elections and how badly Democrats are viewed ever since the recession became a reality. Now that lawmakers have slapped seniors in the face the historical return is that this year marks the first time since 1975 that Social Security beneficiaries didn’t receive a cost of living increase. An extra payment may become a reality later this year if a new jobs bill is introduced to further extend unemployment benefits or the COLA provision in President Obama’s budget is approved.

25 clarcie brown April 2, 2010 at 11:18 pm

clarcie brown …..julia read the bottom of my posted note from 3-31-10……..it states ssc or disability which the ssc means socialty security. and as far as the saying you guys goes a lot of people say that here in fla. no disrespect to anyone. i rest my case.

26 Daniel R. Martin April 2, 2010 at 11:23 pm

Duanne, it appears unlikely that this Congress will vote for a payment to make up for the loss we have taken this year. I am a strong Democrat but unless this Democratically controlled Congress shows more empathy for us Seniors I doubt that I will be voting for any incumbents in November. THIS CONGRESS HAS SHOWN THAT THEY ARE NOT CONCERNED TO THE MOST VULNERABLE AMONG US. SENIORS LET YOUR VOTE BE KNOWN IN NOVEMBER!!!

27 Daniel R. Martin April 2, 2010 at 11:43 pm

SENIORS I AM VERY DISTURBED THAT THIS DEMOCRATICALLY CONTROLLED CONGRESS SHOW SUCH A LACK OF COMPASSION FOR THE SENIORS OF OUR COUNTRY. THEY CLAIM THAT TEHY WANT TO SHOW FISCAL RISTRAINT; IF THAT’S THE CASE WHY DIDNT THEY FREEZE THERE SALARY RAISES THIS YEAR. GO DOWN THE LIST O SEE WHERE YOUR CONGRESSMAN AND SENATORS VOTED AND LETS GIVE THEM THE SAME LEVEL OF SUPPORT.

28 Tom April 3, 2010 at 9:41 am

Hey Dan:

I agree with you, lets rally together those 57 million who missed out on the Social Security one time $250.00 check. And lets get those 57 million to change there votes, as the one they voted for turned his back on them, a task done quite well in politics. There will never be a more perfect time to let them know in Washington that the government “is for the people, by the people.” Lets give them a dose of their own medicine, if we vote for someone else, what do we really, and I mean really have to lose now.
Or we could flood their offices with emails and phone calls and see what excuses they can come up with. Someone has to stand and be noticed, we as people need that little bit of funding! Now in politics people can really see and feel the loyalties the Democrats have showed us. Spring is here, and I serious think its time to do some spring cleaning. A fresh look in politics is a needed badly and if we don’t push the envelop in the other direction we will lose again and again.

I maintained a residence in Florida for 22 years and I love the state, I found one way to help myself was to migrate to a less expensive place to dwell. Oh, it was nice…but I find when I need something, I must do for myself….there were no websites at that time for earning funds. I agree with all the bloggers who want to change the system …on the next election day. I was never a guy in Florida, simply a Sunshine state resident. Case closed.

30 clarcie brown April 3, 2010 at 10:25 am

from clarcie julia you dont understand do you? iwas not saying that you are a guy, iam from fla. i have been here 60 yrs, my whole life the folks here in fla. just use that saying sometimes. its not meant to be disrespectful. it seems that you just take things the wrong way.

31 julia April 3, 2010 at 10:55 am

Does this mean we are friends. I know what I read, I think about what I read. I think about ALL seniors, vets, disabled and the less fortunate in our country. I believe in the cause….give to each what is deserved and no more stress or strife than one can endure. So I’m wise enough to leave this entire site, never to post again. gracefully, I might add!

32 Tom April 3, 2010 at 11:51 am

Dear Julia:

Stop the whining, there was a misunderstanding and deal with it. Human beings make mistakes, its all part of life, yours and mine, and people here as well. If you can’t get over the misunderstanding here, than “yes” move on and good luck in your prefect world then……..CYA !

33 Daniel R. Martin April 3, 2010 at 6:07 pm

Thanks Tom; I’m pnly saying that elected offifials, especially the ones we voted for, are expected to live up to representing our interests. If the culprits who voted against our interests, whether they be Democratic or Republican or Independent, then we have an obligation to vote them out and get men and women supporiting our interests. It isn”t the matter of $250, althought manyof our seniors depend on their SS checks day today, but it is the principal that these representatives want to appear as fiscally prudent and yet were not shy about voting themselvesa raise in pay for this fiscal year. They should pay the price for that indiscretion and the price is being voted out of office.

Let them all know that the 57 million people they screwed, will be more than happy to show their locality too.

38 Michelle April 5, 2010 at 8:22 pm

Everyone call, email and write to the elected officals; we need a better system to fix things. Inflation is negative yet eletricity went up 17.5%! I am down to bare basics almost the only others I can cut is phone and internet.I take online courses and work from home so I need both.

39 Ann April 5, 2010 at 9:23 pm

David……I guess you still don’t believe this???? You better believe it, unless looking for your $250.00 just gives you something to do?

[Update Mar 2010] Unfortunately the Democrat-controlled Senate has rejected a measure by a 50 to 47 vote that would have given seniors a one-time Social Security benefit

For all the one that denide the stimulus checks for the ones on disabilty checks i hope you have prayed and told god why you did not pass the checks because we should have been able to get the checks and now we have to struggle thanks for nothing you all should not be able to have any say and i will pray that you are happy with your self.

41 Audrey Dueno April 6, 2010 at 2:57 pm

I am a senior, 67 years old and live in subsidized elderly housing. Most of the people I have gotten acquainted with live on nothing but a small social security check. Only a few, like myself, may have a small pension from years of hard work. I think it’s a sin for the seniors to be denied the $250 stimulus check. $250 may not be a fortune but for seniors who have nothing for recreation and entertainment and can’t even afford to pay for the deductible and co-pays on their medicare insurance, it would be a God-send and a joy. Why? It might just be a little something extra for a nice meal out, a new outfit or just possibly to catch up on some overdue bills.

42 granniegoo April 6, 2010 at 4:28 pm

By the time anyone listens to us, most of these Non-generous politicians will be retiring and getting their “healthy” retirement checks…so who cares if SSI recipients get a little extra…I like the $250 food stamp idea though…but that will flush too! Like many of you I am disillusioned by our government and the folks we put in office…how soon they forget. Promises, promises…But hey, go ahead and bail out another big financial institutute, rob our social security benefits, borrow from another foreign country…like they care, cut the doctors off that still have the heart to keep helping their Medicare patients (God love them). This is America, land of the free and forgotten!

43 clarcie brown April 6, 2010 at 6:14 pm

hi granniegoo, hope things are going okay for you today. i tottaly agree with you. it seems that the big wheels dont give a darn about us. sure wish there was away to personally know some of the people that we vote in, that would be good because we mite just vote for someone else had we known that they were so uncareing. the main thing is most people that run for office these days have never been without they dont know what it is like to struggle. when we got the letter about us not getting a cost of living raise this year in 2010 and 2011 that really got to me to. them saying that the cost of living didnt go up,well we all know thats a big lie .

44 Jay Reber April 6, 2010 at 8:44 pm

I hope that the congress in washington can live with the decision they made on the 250.00 stimulus checks. If they were in our shoes they would not have denied the bill. If any one hears any thing on this matter please let us know.

45 ann April 7, 2010 at 1:12 am

there will not be a stimulus checkfor know one there say one thing and do another thing just to get hour hopes up that just make’s me sick will i don’t want to vote anymore.

46 shirley April 7, 2010 at 4:26 am

I would to add my 2 cents here, what is happening to this free government we are supposed to have. they have taken away our health benefits, now they are trying to make us poor, threr don’t any of them have any idea about what we all go thru everyday trying to make ends meet isn’t easy. they say when your left palm itches that you are going to get some money, well mine has been itching like crazy this whole week. so where’s the money coming from I don’t have any rich relatives. this is all I have to say about this matter. we have the wrong people running the country. Our forefathers who set up this government werenot rich either.

47 dianne April 7, 2010 at 9:47 am

i dont know if we are getting one but if not shame on the white house for even saying that shame on them all its not fair that we are at the end of the ballot i hope they are proud of themselves we need that little extra they have what they want in life and the heck with us little people

48 Tom April 7, 2010 at 9:56 am

Everyone:

This is an easy thing to do, all the Democrats that voted down the Stimulus check just send them an email with these words;

NO STIMULUS CHECK – NO VOTE

And this just may get their attention, but include in that email, that 57 million votes is devastating with their jobs on the line. This just may let them know “we are sick of being screwed”

49 Daniel R. Martin April 7, 2010 at 10:06 am

TEXAS SENIORS, WHETHER YOU ARE DEMOCRATS, REPUBLICANS OR INDEPENDENTS, IF YOU ARE NOT INDIVIDUALLY WEALTHY AND NEED THE $250 STIMULUS FOR HELP. ASK YOUR REPRESENTATIVE WHY THEY DIDN’T DENY THEMSELVES A RAISE THIS YEAR TO SHOW THEIR CONCERN FOR BEING FISCALLY PRUDENT. LET THEM KNOW YOU WILL REMEMBER THEIR VOTE AGAINST US WHEN OUR TIME COMES TO VOTE FOR THEM. i LET CONGRESSMAN BARTON AND SENATORS CRONYN AND HUTCHISON KNOW HOW I FELT. THEY ONLY UNDERSTAND VOTES NOT APPALS.

50 Steve April 7, 2010 at 1:33 pm

Well I know there is a lot of folks that are not happy about the congress not passing the $250 stimulus checks and we should be heard we the people of the united states of america will not take your lies no more we want new people in office that will help all of us and I am a voter and nobody that is in the congress now will be getting my vote you all are liers so we hope the while we are going from day to day trying to make sure thing like our lights and rent and so on not to get cut off that all of you injoy living on what we should be and that is the money we should have gotten not you.
