The Don Jail had an open house this weekend for the public – it will be open for last time before renovation into office towers. We went to check it out however the lineups were unbelievable (4 hour wait) so we left without seeing it. The jail is available for bookings until October so I’m hoping someone will do some booking and run the tours privately – they could easily charge $5-$10 per person and make some $$.
As interesting as it might have been – I doubt it would have been as good as Alcatraz – of all the “touristy” things I’ve done – a visit to the old island jail ranks #1 on my list. San Fran is a great city to visit (although very expensive) – I think visiting there and Lake Tahoe (3 hours away) again would make for a great trip. Maybe when the kids are a bit older… 🙂

They do offer private tours of the Don. I think it’s $20. You can have a tour of the new Don Jail for free, but you don’t get a say in when you leave! 🙂
David – you’re right – I thought you had to book the whole jail but this article mentions guided tours for $20 (daytime) and $25 (night time).
I think we will do it.

When I was travelling around, I once stayed in a hostel which was a converted jail (you slept in a cell at night). Fun experience!

For those who couldn’t make it to the Old Don Jail in Toronto. there is a terrific new book about the last hangings in Canada, which took place at The Don. “The Last to Die: Ronald Turpin, Arthur Lucas, and the End of Capital Punishment in Canada” goes into great detail about the Old Don Jail, and the last days of Turpin and Lucas before they were hanged there on December 11, 1962. I got my copy at Amazon.com
